Immersal-Plane

AR Art in Shopping Mall

More detailed discussion with Luis Oscar, CEO and Founder of Mawari.

Centimeter-level precision was crucial

Can you tell me about a recent project in which you used Immersal?

We did a collaboration with Kohei Nawa and KDDI, and we had to map a full statue hanging from the ceiling in a shopping mall with the worst lighting ever.

And we had to stream a 200,000 point cloud with centimeter-accurate positioning into this real stage. So the end result is that we collaborated with Immersal. We used their VPS technology. We used Mawari's streaming and compression technology. And we were able to provide an experience that has never been seen before at a consumer level. It was so successful that actually the shopping mall decided to renew for one full year.

What were the challenges you faced?

Challenges - okay, so the place is very avant garde so there's a lot of glass and reflections and is very geometric. So there are a lot of patterns. So it is very difficult for computer vision algorithms to tell the difference.

And the most challenging thing is the artists wanted centimeter-level precision. He was not willing to give in like, you know, in industrial use cases you can get away with lower quality content. In this case, it was working with a world-renowned artist that is kind of like a Salvador Dali you know, and something that reaches the consumers; consumers also don't give a discount for quality. And we passed that challenge very successfully.
